The goats finally came home last Thursday from staying over at the neighbor's house for the winter with their new Togg friends Stew and Curry.
Pocket Goat the Nigerian was in labor that very evening. The goat manual said 95% of goat births happen without a hitch. A 100% of my goat births have gone smoothly. I went to be bed late Thursday night and Pocket was contracting, but nothing coming out yet.
When I went back out to the barn at 4 am I knew something was very wrong. One leg was coming out, but thats it. I tried to help her out and managed to get the one leg that was bent back pulled around the right way. Now two legs out, but that head, there was no way that was fitting through that little hole! By 5:30 I was asking advice from my neighbor with the fiber goats, and by 6:00 I was putting Pocket in the back of my little hatchback and heading to the vet.
A C-section was performed and Pocket was saved, but not her new little baby. So sad.
Pocket is sore, but healing quickly. I am milking her twice a day, but she is on injectable Penicllin, so I am just tossing the milk for a couple weeks. Bummer. My new cheese press and butter muslin, and fresh cultures will have to wait a little longer.
I toast a glass of store bought cow's milk my tough little Pocket Goat.
Sure hope Moon the Toggenburg is bred.
